As you know, people who can't see well can't do their jobs well. Headaches, fatigue from eyestrain and visual discomfort can really hurt an employee's job performance. In fact, miscorrected vision – even when it is so slight that it is not even noticed – can reduce an employee's productivity up to 20 percent!

Employee Absenteeism

Employers will be interested to hear how vision problems often lead to increased absenteeism. Workers with visual impairments are more likely to be dissatisfied with their jobs – and many may be absent from work more frequently to deal with the stress and fatigue caused by their vision problems. Even when present in the office, workers with these issues may work less efficiently, a phenomenon known as "presenteeism." Presenteeism results in 32 times more productivity losses than absenteeism alone, according to The Vision Council.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Remind employers that Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a common issue among employees at the office, due to excessive work on a computer.

Symptoms of CVS occur in 50 to 90 percent of workers who routinely use computers for work. CVS symptoms to discuss with employers include:

  • Eyestrain
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Blurred Near Vision
  • Blurred Distant Vision
  • Dry or Irritated Eyes
  • Neck or Backaches
  • Diplopia (Double Vision)
